Overview:
Taos Onstage is holding auditions for its third production of the season, Mrs. California by Doris Baizley. The play takes place in pre-women's lib 1955. A homemaker's contest is in progress -- the winner to embody the epitome (at the time) of the ideal woman: "a happy, good and beautiful homemaker." Poking wicked good fun at the pretentious hokum of a hotly contested pageant where things go comically wrong, Mrs. California gives us glimpses of the complex personalities that lie beneath the judge-charming caricatures the contestants have created for themselves. A commentary on the way advertising and media made women question their intelligence and worth, Mrs. California explores the consequences of striving to be the ideal woman. Performance dates are Feb. 14-18 and 21-24.

Characters:
Parts are available for five women and two men. Roles include:

Dot - Mrs. Los Angeles, talked into participating, tries to fit in, questions everything.

Babs - her neighbor, brash, flirty, the flagship of modern feminism.

Dudley - Dot's gas company sponsor, the quintessential corporate man in a gray flannel suit.

Mrs. San Francisco - sophisticated, elegant, Francophile.

Mrs. Modesto - tacky, bespectacled, mother of seven.

Mrs. San Bernardino - all-American housewife.

Stage Manager - irritable, exasperated.
